Gabrielle Carlo received her M.A. in Musicology from the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College and her B.A. in Vocal Performance from Buffalo State. Due to her interest in archives, libraries, and the importance of preserving history, she received her Master of Library and Information Science with a specialization in Music Librarianship/Archives from the University at Buffalo. Gabrielle joined the Music Department faculty as lecturer and teaches music history for non-majors. Her affinity for classical and American popular music genres resulted in an examination of American composer William Grant Still and his obscure opera, Troubled Island, for her master’s thesis. Gabrielle has also performed as a vocalist of jazz and classical music in and around Buffalo and New York City. She incorporates music history into her performances by providing historical introductions to the vocalists and composers she interprets, which emphasizes the way that research can enrich a performance. Aside from teaching, Gabrielle is a full-time Archivist at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. Preserving the gallery’s history not only fulfills a passion, but also contributes to the enhancement of the arts community in Buffalo. Prior to this, she worked as Assistant Music Archivist at the University of Buffalo Music Library. Her combined passion for teaching, archives, and performance all come into play in her classroom, which makes for an interactive and engaging learning experience.
